# Why do my inserted Writer images keep disappearing?

Why do my inserted Writer images keep disappearing? 1. I have an almost new laptop, Windows 10, 16MB RAM 1T Hard Drive, pretty much top of the line. 2. I have auto-save turned off.

Research says this has been a Libre Office problem for "ages." If I had know that, as much as I rely on inserted images for projects, I would NOT have deleted my purchased copies of MS Office to go with Libre Office. I love it otherwise, but not being able to rely on inserted images is going to be a deal breaker for me.

Do you have any idea/input on what may help?

Thank you. Donna, a grandma in Texas who is getting pretty frustrated

Oh, my! I got the email on how to try to upload a screenshot, and it is WAY over my head so I will not be attempting that. Truly, I am beginning to think I don't even belong here because I will be unnecessarily bothering nice people. I have handled "forum help sites" before and managed them fine, but this one leaves me baffled because it is different, which is okay for most, but not for me as it appears difficult to interact. I don't know, maybe it's just me... probably is. Thanks anyway, everyone, but I have tried all your suggestions and those I found off the site, and nothing is checking out. But thanks for trying. I give up on solving this issue and on trying to use this site. Your valuable time would be better spent helping someone a little more advanced that me ...(more)

You have gone Tools > Options > Writer > View and unticked Images.

Tick Images and you will see them.

The clue will be getting the word Image1 and Image2 etc at top left.

There is still a bug in LibreOffice which causes images to be lost but, instead of getting Image1 you get Read Error as Writer cannot find the image when it looks for it.

Have you accidentally turned off viewing of images? If so, You will see the image surround and some red text that says something like Image 2. This feature is to reduce resource use in image heavy documents. Click in the menu View > Images and Charts to toggle the setting. Cheers, Al

OK, it is not the above. Did you save your documents in native .odt format? Always save this way even if you make a copy for someone else when it is finished.

Open your document, open the Navigator (compass icon) in the sidebar, or as a stand-alone toolbar (F5). Under the heading Images, double-click an image number (or name if you have been diligent), it will select the image, if it is not visible you will see the selection handles. At this point you could use the arrow buttons to move the image, or you could right-click the image number and select Image > Edit....

In the dialog that opens under the tab Type you can change the anchoring, set the position of the image on the page, or just tick the box Keep inside text boundaries

In the same dialog, under the Wrap tab you could also untick Allow overlap. Cheers, Al

Tried all suggestions, did not help. I have pics but cannot find where I can upload them... I guess I am just too old for this. I have tried all the suggestions I can find anywhere online, but nothing stops the issue, but, apparently, a lot of people have this same issue... The issue occurs with jpg or tif, and not huge ones. I just do insert image, pretty simple, don't know even a grandma could mess that up. When I clicked the images and charts as shown above, it showed boxes, even one for the missing photo. When they abruptly disappear, nothing shows, it is just blank, then when I click in the area, a few tiny boxes show around the border of where the photo disappeared from. Sorry to be such a bother. Donna
