Problem installing LibreOffice from deb package downloaded from LibreOffice web page

I’m a newbie in Ubuntu and I’m using Ubuntu 13.10. This week I’ve removed libreoffice packages (using synaptic) from my system because I understand that an upgrade of libreoffice would fix a bug which won’t let me use keyboard shortcuts while in foreign layout.

After removing all my packages containing term ‘libreoffice’ I’ve downloaded the last version of libreoffice 4.1.4, (from Libreoffice site) unzipped it with archive manager and then typed the command sudo dpkg -i *.deb in DEB folder.

the installations seems to stop in the middle without putting any icons on my unity launcher

I typed in terminal “libreoffice4.1” but it did not execute. this msg error appeared:

The application cannot be started.
[context=“shared”] caught unexpected com.sun.star.ucb.InteractiveAugmentedIOException: > a folder could not be created

(EDIT: I think Ive solved this problem deleting libreoffice directories in .config directory:
using sudo rm -r ~/.config/libreoffice* it executes now but the initial bug of shortcut keys still persists)

Why that complicated. Did you check you are the owner of the /.config/libreoffice folder? If not change and look what happens.

Try this out:

(1) Press CTR+ALT+T to open Terminal:

(2) Remove all the LibreOffice software you have installed so far:

sudo apt-get purge libreoffice*

(3) Add LibreOffice 4.1 PPA to your Ubuntu system:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1

(4) Update your software repository list:

sudo apt-get update

(5) Install LibreOffice

sudo apt-get install libreoffice

And now little bit longer post, because you are newbie and you should be properly introduced into installing software on Ubuntu without making terrible mistakes that many many users do. First of all, try to avoid installing software on Ubuntu from downloading deb files and installing them. This is general mistake from users coming e.g. from Windows environment where downloading and installing is the only option. Ubuntu has almost for every software a PPA (personal package archive).

Benefits of PPA or official repository:
a) Software is specially adjusted to run on Ubuntu and it is tested by many users.
b) When new version of software like fix e.g. from 4.1.4 to 4.1.5 comes out the fix is also specially adjusted for Ubuntu, tested for working fine and then in you system it will get automatically updated (if you update a repository or write: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade command).

Downsides of using downloaded deb package:
a) Deb package is probably not adjusted for Ubuntu specifics.
b) Deb package is probably not tested enough on Ubuntu specifics problems.
c) If new version specially fix version comes out, then you have to download new version and install it manually.

Linux deb package on LibreOffice web site is general package for all kind of Linux distribution and not specially tuned on any system - e.g LibreOffice deb package on official web page is also prepared for old systems to make sure that as much as possible of the Linux distributions to get new version. The downsides are:
a) Software is not tested on any specific Linux distribution (e.g. Ubuntu).
b) Software must be compiled for very very old processors. So not fully optimized for newer versions of processors, so working slowly on newer processors.
c) Software must remove some of the features, so running LibreOffice on Ubuntu will get without some of the features.

Install LibreOffice deb package from LibreOffice only if there is no PPA available. Also install from deb package when new fixed version comes out and there is no update yet available in PPA and you are EXTREMELY dependent to get a new fix.

Some additional words about installing software on Ubuntu. It should be in the following order as much as possible:
(1) Install software as much as possible from official Ubuntu repository opening Ubuntu Software Center and install the software or using Terminal or Synaptic etc. This is specially tested software and it is very very likely that it will be running as much of problems free as possible. The downside of official repository is that it is not updated to the latest versions. So if you need the latest and the greatest then follow bellow.
(2) Search for official PPA repository to add newer versions of software to your system. You have to know that this is not as tested as official Ubuntu repository, so you can have some problems here. But for repositories that a lot of users install and use - like step-by-step instructions on top of this post - the problems are minimal.
(3) Search (or ask on forums) for unofficial PPA. This repositories can be risky because you have to TRUST the package maintainer to make sure there are not some security risks involved. This is similar to downloading software on some suspicious web sites for Windows software.
(4) Try searching for deb packages that are specially prepared for specific Ubuntu version and install it using: dpkg -i deb_package
(5) Try searching for general deb packages like the one on LibreOffice download web page. This software is not specially prepared for Ubuntu and you can have some problems with it. Try avoiding this kind of software if possible (try finding one of above solutions first).
(6) Download source code and compile it for yourself. Some software is easy to download source code and compile it for yourself. You can find easy to follow step-by-step instructions. But for complex software like LibreOffice you will gonna have a lot of pain of doing this. So get into this if you really experienced. You got to know if you made some mistake you can not only brake your installing software, but also braking your operating system.

I followed your guidelines and now it executes (I also managed to execute libreoffice (see EDIT in original post) but I still have the initial shot-cut-key bug i had in the first place
