Indenting The Body of Numbered Paragraphs

I wish to indent numbered paragraphs but not the paragraph number.

I would like the main text of the paragraph to be indented with full justification.

Basically I want the number to be flush on the left and the paragraph moved over to a tab but justified so that the paragraph doesn’t run under the number.

When I press tab on the second and subsequent lines, it doesn’t give me full justification and doesn’t always save properly.

Is this possible in Libre Office?

I just switched over from Word Perfect for DOS (yes, I know, that’s an old program but I liked it  and I used to be able to just press F4 or something and the entire body of the paragraph, minus the numbering, would move over to a tab and be justified.

Thanks for your time and hopefully assistance.

First, thank you for the responses. I didn’t realize there was so much documentation available with Libre Office.

I’m still having trouble figuring things out and I imagine that’s due to laziness on my part, a lack of intelligence and having used Word Perfect for DOS for the last twenty plus years, so please bear with me.

What I’m trying to do is create user defined numbered paragraphs with sub paragraphs (1.0, 1.1, 1.1.1) while having the body of the paragraph (not the number) tabbed and justified.

What I had hoped for was that I could just select the text I want to tab and justify and press a button or select an option and the text move over without having to jump through some hoops.

I see there’s an “Increase Indent” button on the default toolbar and that would almost be exactly what I’m looking for but it doesn’t allow me to separate the number from the paragraph - the paragraph number moves over with the text and I’d like the number to stay put.

I’ll still trying to figure out things with the answers provided but if there’s an easy answer out there, please let me know.

Thanks for raising a separate question. I have answered this in the related question.

The settings are in the property dialog of the numbering in dialog page ‘Position’. You get the dialog via menu or context menu > Bullets and Numbering, or via ‘Modify’ in the context menu of the list numbering style.

Click on level 1. The value in ‘Numbering followed by’ determines the begin of the text in the first line of the numbered paragraph. The value in ‘Indent at’ determines the indent of the second and following lines of the paragraph. To get them aligned, you have to use the same value.

The value in ‘Aligned at’ together with the selection ‘Numbering Alignment’ determine where inside the area which is reserved for the number, the number is shown.

In addition to what Regina has stated, refer pp.80-83 (direct formatting) and pp.229-232 (list styles) of the Writer Guide v4.0 for details on how to format lists. The pages relating to list styles more clear illustrates how to change this distance between the item identifier and the item text.
