When you create a template (.ott file and you attached an ordinary .odt file, but this does not change the answer), be aware that Format
>Bullets & Numbering
settings are not saved in the document. This is limitation in Writer and has consequences:
- existing lists are formatted as you tuned them (but this is not of real use in a template, by definition)
- future lists will have to be reformatted by hand.
IMHO, this is not a fault because this limitation will force/encourage you to design your own paragraph styles to be used with list.
When writing “polished” documents, never use the toolbar buttons, including the list ones (or [Shift
+]F12
) because this creates direct formatting.
Customise Numbering 1 in its Outline & Numbering
tab to associate it with list style Numbering 123. Then, you’ll tune Numbering 123 just like you would for Format
>Bullets &
Numbering`.

Your first screenshot shows that the Nunito font has rather wide numerals. Your settings leave only 1.27-0.64 = 0.63 cm for 2 digits and a dot. This is clearly not enough
-
You tried to compensate in the second screenshot with a space after the numbering instead of the tab. This means there is no break between the number and text and this causes misalignment both for the dot between single-digit and 2-digit numbers and between the text on the first line and subsequent lines.
-
You made the situation even worse in the third screenshot by removing any insertion after the numbering.
IMHO, the best settings with varying lengths numbers are alignment Right
, tab stop and indent at same value (say 1.27 cm) and aligned at 1.0 cm. This leaves 1cm between the margin and the dot for the numbers and creates a gap of 0.27 cm between the dot and the text.
In case you want a wider gap, increase simultaneously tab stop and indent. If you need more space for the numbers, increase Aligned at and also tab stop and indent to keep a correct gap.
I repeat it again: once you have found your best settings, stuff them into Numbering 123 and use exclusively Numbering 1 paragraph style to format your lists. This style will be saved in the template and will survive exits from Writer.
Learn to work with styles.
PS: you have some form of direct formatting on the first 1. and the 9. list items because their number has not the same size and font face as the others. Direct formatting is evil and will ruin your nice formatting.
