Is celeron processor 743 Pentium-compatible?

  1. Trying to figure out if I can use LibreOffice. Is my little Celeron processor 743 Pentium-compatible?

  2. If it is, does it matter if I install LO first, then uninstall Microsoft Office? Or should I uninstall MO first, then install LO?
[OK, per Bencomp’s suggestion, I asked this as a separate question. Please answer it here: Does it matter if I install LO first, then uninstall Microsoft Office? ]

  3. Hope I didn’t use a wrong tag…where is the key of what they mean? [Thanks, Bencomp, for your question and answer of this at Where can I find tag definitions to help me choose relevant tags for questions? .]

  4. Also, why does LO have to have access to my contacts on FB? I felt squeamish having to sign up with that anyway. Creepy having it all interlocked.

Thanks.

Please split your question. I think your last question has been asked before - did you search before asking?

Ummm, can’t you just answer what you can?
I’m new to this forum and definitely NOT a techie (obviously). The first 2 questions indicate I don’t even have the download. The next two came out of trying to figure out how to ask questions.
And yes, I did search as best I could for the first 2 q’s. Could you cut me some slack about the other 2?

I could, but I’d like to think of sites like these that they don’t serve to answer one person’s question(s), but to become a reference over time. Findability increases a lot when the questions are clear-cut and are specific. Your question about (un)installing MS Office is relevant, but I wouldn’t expect it in a question about processors (which didn’t sound as relevant for an office suite Q&A from just the main question as it is with the explanation).

I asked your third question: Where can I find tag definitions to help me choose relevant tags for questions?

Bencomp, thank you. Now I understand. I’ll make #2 into a separate question (perhaps you’ll answer it there?) and look at your link for answer to the third.

In short: yes, Celeron processors are compatible with Pentium processors and LibreOffice should install just fine on a Celeron computer.

The system requirements for installing LibreOffice indeed say a Pentium-compatible processor is needed to install LibreOffice on Windows or Linux. A couple of brand names are mentioned as compatible: Pentium III (made by Intel) and Athlon (made by AMD).

Although processor specifications (clock speed, number of cores, 32 or 64) of new processors have changed pretty dramatically over the past years, the basic specification of what processors can do (the architecture) hasn’t changed that much. There are two variants in nearly all consumer computers: x86 and x64. The latter architecture is newer and it is compatible to the former.

LibreOffice is built for x86 architectures (like Pentium, Athlon, Celeron are) and needs a reasonably recent processor to run smoothly. Pentium IIIs are from over a decade ago, so computers from recent years can run LibreOffice.

Thank you! Whew! OK, so I’m good to go.
