Can I print long margin comments in Writer?

I want to add comments (in the page margins) to a writer file, and then print it as a pdf file. I’ve found the option through the print menu to print the comments, but I still have problems when I try to print long comments: that is, comments whose yellow text box has a scrollbar.

The exported pdf shows part of the long comment, and the rest is hidden. In a similar scenario in MS Word, the long comments are added to extra pages at the end of the document.

Are your comments an integral part of the work? I.e. have they a permanent added-value to the text? Or, are they just transient reminders about the task remaining to do?

In the first case, if they are supposed to remain to give some explanation to the end reader, you should transform them into footnotes. Though footnotes cannot have a full continuation page of their own (there is always a minimum of space allocated to main text), multi-page footnotes are quite well handled.

In the second case, there is no real solution. A tedious workaround could be to put your comments into margin frames. Frames can be linked so that if a comment overflows a frame, it can be continued in the linked frame. But this is a full manual procedure.

Thanks for your answer. The cause of the original question is the required format when reviewing an article for a journal. So, I don’t have the option to change it. I guess I have to find a computer with MS word.

From the menu, select File > Print....

In the dialog “Print” select tab “LibreOffice Writer” and then for “Comments:” select “Place at the end of document”.

If you find a computer with Word, make sure it is a newer version than Word 2010, the comments stay on the same page during printing and if there is too much in the comments the excess won’t get printed. There is an ellipsis to click to view the rest of the comments in a side bar but it doesn’t get printed.

I would suggest that you do two print runs: One with comments in the margins, the second comments only and staple that at the back of the first file. Otherwise, look at the options in comments in the field that ebot has shown on the screenshot, there are more there than Word 2010 offers.
