Cell Borders (in thick black lines, not thin)

Hi,

I have just changed to Libre Office this week.

When I add a ‘‘border’’ (from toolbar-icon) around a ‘cell’ I only get a thin black line (not a thick border)

Can anyone tell me what I have to do to get the ‘Toolbar Icon’ to automatically add a thick border around a cell please.

(A) This is what i did, but it did not work:
Styles> Default>Modify>Borders>Line arrangement>Line>(ok)

Upon rechecking my new instruction had been correctly saved by the software.

Back to my spreadsheet. Press border icon = once again no thick outer line border to any cell?

I have been trying to follow this:

(B) User Defined Borders in Cells

It says 'go to user defined settings!
Not sure where that is ??
I was in the RHS hidden screen = ‘styles’ and ‘defaults’
The options are:
DEFAULT / ACCENT / HEADING / RESULT / STATUS // TEXT
But not sure if this is the correct place to be!!

Silly question, but should the software not automatically be configured to put in a thick lined border from the special ‘‘toolbar icon’’ !!

Thank you…Sammy

Hello

LibreOffice Help - User Defined Borders in Cells

(There are use cases, which are covered by LibreOffice Help)

I followed the 1st instruction.
Unfortunately this does not create a border after i formatted the border from the toolbar - just a thin black line.

I followed the 2nd instruction in Default.
Unfortunately it does not create a border when i click the border button, just a thin black line.

I did try both these options before posting my question, as unsure what else to try.

If you already did that, why don’t you let know that fact to possible volunteering in you question. We can’t know were you are, and were to start telling how … what’s that hard to tell “Followed description in … and did not succeed”

Is this a duplicate of 287330/how-to-set-a-bold-border-default?

If so, there is already an answer there. In case the answer is not satisfactory, comment it instead of creating a nearly identical question.

I felt i had not explained my problem correctly.
I posted new question, more to the point.
That’s all. No offence meant.

There’s no offence. But the ergonomics of this site is, well, below usual standards and it is easy to get users confused. In such a case, when you feel you weren’t clear enough, it is much better to edit the initial question to reword it. Contributors who answered get notified and can change their answer to fit your needs.

Asking a new question may get unnoticed. This is why in case of follow-on or duplicate it is wise to add a cross-link to both.

LO in general is based on styles. Styles in Calc are less developed than in Writer but the principles are roughly the same.

Toolbar buttons and keyboard shortcuts for formatting are poor substitutes for styles. Buttons apply developers-defined defaults. Unfortunately, contrary to Writer, you can’t customise these defaults.

This is apparent with the border button. The associated dropdown menu allows you to choose the “degree” of framing (1-, 2, 4-sided plus internal lines) but you can’t select any line width. The adjacent buttons are for line style and colour but there is none for line width.

As already said, there is no menu item nor Tools>Options one to change the defaults.

You have only two options to adjust your borders:

  • fully manual with Format>Cells, Borders tab, applied to the selected cells
  • styling after defining a custom style

Oh, what a pity!!!
It seemed such a good software choice at first!!
I was not aware that the buttons were not working and there is no way of changing them!!
Seems to defeat the object of displaying the buttons and has wasted a lot of my time over the past few days!!
Now I have to look for an alternative or go back to excel!!!
What a drag!!
