If I click the button for "fill format mode", nothing happens. It doesn't even change to the "clicked" state, although it remains clickable.

Can you be more specific? Where is "Fill Format Mode"?

Which LO version are you using? Under which OS and version?

In the Styles and Formatting dialog (F11) after you have selected a style (e.g. for a character or paragraph), then click the paint bucket icon at the upper right of the Styles and Formatting icon (in Windows the tool tip is Fill Format Mode; in linux it is Apply the selected style to the object....). After this, click in your text and the style will be applied to that portion of the text and can be repeated with another portion of text until you click the paint brush again or close the Styles and Formatting dialog.

Yes, I do actually mean that button, but if I go through the process you described, nothing happens. If i click the button, neither my cursor changes, nor the button reacts. It does not change to the clicked state, but looks exactly like it did bofore i clicked it.

This problem has re-issued in Writer Version I can find no way to exit Fill Format Mode. I have had this problem off and on for several years.
