I just upgraded my libre Office account and now cannot open any of my files.

(Moved from Comment) When I opened my computer this morning there was an arrow pointing to a world-like simble telling me there was an upgrade for LibreOffice. I opened it and it took me to the LibreOffice website where I had two choices for the upgrade, upgrade to 7 or 6.4.7.2 I chose the 6.4.7.2 I downloaded this file and the wizard added it to my computer. When I tried to open one of my files it would not open.I tried other files and the same thing happened they would not open. I do have windows 10.

See these links. This link shows Wizard 2021-01-30_10-07-26 This screenshot shows installing wizard https://www.screencast.com/t/YIkoNWil… this screenshot shows file I tried to open https://www.screencast.com/t/lxZ6MIuc… Please help. Thanks

There is no LibreOffice account, it’s a standalone program. What are you talking about?

I just downloaded an upgrade of LibreOffice and now I cannot open any of my files.

The information given with your question is not very revealing. Upgrade? From which version to which version? And from where did you download it? From the official ODF website or from some big company’s app store? And which operating system are you using? (Not Windows 10, I hope?) Also, how do you open your documents – from the LO Recent Files list or by using your OS file manager?

Thank you for the extra information, it is very helpful. I have moved it from a Comment to add it to your original question.

I don’t use Windows 10 so can’t help you with that part. (I think the problem might be with file permissions maintained by Windows.)

But have you tried opening LibreOffice (the program) and used its menu File → Open, then use the dialog box to navigate to your document and open it that way, instead of using the Windows 10 file manager?

Hi, No I do not know how to do that. Can you explain how? Thanks

I can’t see the error message, link is broken. What did it say?

Sorry, @EarnestAl my copy/paste of the OP’s comment caused two of the links to be truncated. Now I can’t reproduce them. Only the first one still works.

Can anyone help me with my problem?

Copy and pasting the question is not helpful. What did the error message say?

Yes, copy and pasting my improperly done paste only repeats my error.

Here are the links again. This screenshot shows the Wizard that was used to install LibreOffice 6.4.7.2 0nto my computer 2021-01-31_13-34-23

There was no error message. Please help. Thanks

And what happens when you try to open a file from within LibreOffice?

I do not know what I did but I am able to open my files now. Thanks for your help.

Hi, I was doing all kinds of things and then the file opened. I am not sure how I did it. Thanks

Sounds like a Windows issue. Probably, there are updates waiting for computer to restart. I find, despite what MS says about being able to carry on working, weird stuff happens if I don’t restart immediately Windows tells me that it needs a restart.

In the absence of a description of the symptoms here are some possibilities. Note that the last 2 links to your pictures do not work. You can edit your question to fix the links or add as a slide (green icon next to paperclip)

Windows has lost File Association.

Click Start Menu > Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Set defaults by app > LibreOffice 6.4 > Manage.

Click on each file type from .odb to .oxt and select LibreOffice as the default to open. Close window when complete

Files opening Read Only or permission denied

If you are using Windows Defender

Allow LibreOffice access to controlled folder

The below numbered list is from Use the Windows Defender Security app to allow specific apps

  1. Open the Windows Security by
selecting the shield icon in the
task bar or searching the start menu
    for Defender.
  2. Select the Virus & threat
    protection
    tile (or the shield
icon on the left menu bar) and then
    select Ransomware protection.
  3. Under the Controlled folder
    access
    section, select Allow an
    app through Controlled folder
    access
  4. Select Add an allowed app and
follow the prompts to add apps. You
    need to allow access to
    soffice.bin

Turn Off Defender (maybe for dual boot)

Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
Under Controlled folder access, select Manage Controlled folder access.
Switch the Controlled folder access setting from On to Off.

If you are using third party anti virus

If you do have a third party anti-virus go into settings and then look for something like anti-ransomware or folder protection. Have a look at the blocked apps list, if you see soffice.bin in there change it to Allowed (you might have to read AV help if not obvious). Otherwise go to the Allowed Apps setting and allow soffice.bin, this might not be easy so you might have to add the different LibreOffice executables (Calc, Writer, etc.) to the Allowed list. Note that 3rd party anti-virus might make files Read Only so you can create a new file but you can’t save it subsequently. Sometimes, you might need to reboot after allowing a program access.

Cheers, Al
