I’ve followed the instructions on how to add columns of # but the answer come out as #### ? I also have excel and use the same method and it works just fine?

You don’t need to add columns. You need to expand them to accommodate the contents. Or just try to zoom in.
Perhaps you need to give more width to the column, so the result can keep in the cell.
