How to insert index of illustration in LO Writer, Version: 7.0.4.2 (x64)

How to insert index of illustration in LO Writer, Version: 7.0.4.2 (x64) - in the older versions there were an option in index insertion toolbox. In ver. 7.0.4.2 there is no such an option.
I’ve got an answer:
“If you have added captions by right-clicking on the image and selected Add caption then that numbering and captions can be made into a table of figures.
Click where you want the table to be. In the menu click Insert > Table of Contents and Index > Table of Contents, Index or Bibliography.
In the dialog that opens, select the tab Type, under the heading Type and Title there is a drop down box labelled Type, select Table of Figures. Click OK or make other changes.
This works in my LO 7.0.4.2 (x64), Windows 10 20H2.”
Thanks!

When I insert new photos it works, but the problem is if I copy photos from an older file. In that older file photos have captions and illustration index. After pasting it into a new file it seems to be not seen as illustrations or figures and I cannot generate this index or table (why do You change the names: index into table and illustration into figures? the meaning is similar, but it’s problem when You are looking for something). It’s very frustrating and timeloosing activity to rewrite captions manually, to set formating etc. Maybe there is a possibility to do it automatically?

Edit your question to clarify. Do you want to add a caption to your illustration? Do you want to make a table of existing captions?

For a table of captions, explain how you created them. In particular, tell to which category you attached them (if you Insert>Caption).

If you have added captions by right-clicking on the image and selected Add caption then that numbering and captions can be made into a table of figures.

This works in my LO 7.0.4.2 (x64), Windows 10 20H2. What don’t you see?

There is no change of names. A Figure is a separate type from an Illustration, a Drawing, a Text or a Table. The option to choose or change the type was made when the caption was added.

Personally, I normally use Figure for all images plus also Table if needed. I don’t know if it is possible to combine the different types into one index easily, or at all. If you name all your objects you can do an index User defined.

Captions may be associated with various “counters”. The counter is selected with the Category drop-down menu in the caption dialog. I have not tried to paste a captioned image, but it is possible that the category was not the same. In this case the counter is not the same and the image will not be registered in the same list. It is possible to change the counter but the procedure is contorted, I won’t describe it.

I tried pasting some captioned Figures from earlier documents and they appeared in an index of Figures without problem after updating the index. An illustration caption created for the test did not appear in the index.

My previous comment about illustration caption reads badly. I meant that I could not mix Illustration and Figure in the same index. I can create an index for either or for each.

If you have added captions by right-clicking on the image and selected Add caption then that numbering and captions can be made into a table of figures.

If most of your images are captioned Figure x: MyImage but you have copied an Illustration (or other type) captioned image from another document and you want to keep the caption but change it to Figure then delete the “Illustration x” part of the caption and type "Figure " (Figure and space) then click Insert > Field > More fields (Ctrl+F2). In the dialog, choose the tab labelled Variables and under Type choose Number range, under Select choose Figure, just make sure Format is the same as your other Figures, most likely Arabic (1 2 3). Leave Value blank and click OK. Update your Table of Figures.

Easiest way is to just copy the Figure x from the caption of another image and paste it over the deleted Illustration x. The field will copy and update, the index will show the entry on update.

In fact, it isn’t necessary for the index to change the name Illustration to Figure, you just have to change the numbering field.
