How can I change text direction from horizontal to vertical

Recently (LibO 4.1.4) I created a New Label document in Writer. To match the orientation of text with the usage of the labels, I could change the text direction from horizontal to vertical but WITHOUT changing the text direction in the page format. (Changing the text direction in the page format destroys the label arrangement.)

Now (LibO 4.1.5) I need to create a new label document for different label size and run into these problems:
1 - I forgot how I made it and don’t find it back (stupid me?!?)
2 - Do not find any hint in Help and the Help Wiki
3 - Copying text from the old label document over to the new one does not carry over the vertical direction
4 - Even if I select a text, the button to switch text directions in Writer are greyed out.

In Impress (4.1.5) both buttons are visible and work fine.

How can I change the text direction from horizontal to vertical without changing the text direction in the page format?

Great news! I need this to create labels for my wine bottles. :wine_glass:

The text-direction buttons belong to the property of a graphic object. You can use it in Writer, when you insert the “T” object. So one solution is to not write directly into the label, but use a T object.

The other property to turn a character is in menu Format > Character > Position > Rotation/Scaling. But that works only for very short paragraphs.

But I wonder, why you want to rotate it at all. Do you have labels for folders, small width and long height, and want to write long texts? Then you can set the page to landscape and arrange the labels with long width and small height, one below the other, and write in normal direction. The printer driver will turn the page to the paper sheet orientation automatically.

@Regina - Thanks for the hints. I will test them later in detail. Reason for changing text direction is that I can get labels for binders backs here in JPN as I am used to get them in Europe.

Are both of the options MS Office compatible?
