HTML comments in Ask.LibO posts?

I realized that if I type HTML comments in a post, such as:

<!-- [! [test-odp-lo1.png] (http://i.imgur.com/VOXJQhA.png)] (http://i.imgur.com/VOXJQhA.png) -->

… then the live Markdown preview shows them fine - but as soon as I post, the contents inside the comment tags are shown anyway, e.g. the same line above, inserted without preformatting, renders this:

I’m aware this isn’t exactly an advertised feature of Markdown on this site; but it can be quite useful (e.g. when you’re trying to change image links one by one in a post).

Would there be any other ways to use inline comments with LO postings?

It is not clear to me, exactly what you are trying to achieve i.e., why comment out a link to an image? In any case this sounds like a question that is more suited to the AskBot forum, as AskBot is the software use in this forum. Limitations / enhancement requests of this nature are best directed there.

Thanks for that, @owen - one reason could be, if one posts alternate links to images (e.g. I have links on my own site; but I want to use a copy on imgur; and should the imgur ones rot, the comments would be there to remind me when I eventually notice that and edit the post - without bothering the other readers about that issue).
