Spreadsheet save problem

I’m running LibreOffice Version: 4.2.0.4 English
Build ID: 05dceb5d363845f2cf968344d7adab8dcfb2ba71
on a Win7 Home Premium os, Service Pack 1 (also English) and am having an issue with saving a spreadsheet (using Calc). Because I need to be able to access the document on a PC that does not have LibreOffice and on which I have no admin rights to install it, I have to save in MS office format.

I elected to save as type “Microsoft Excel 2003 XML (.xml)” format on the “Save As” window
That brought up a window with a red-bordered triangle and text:“This document may contain formatting or content that cannot be saved in the currently selected file format “Microsoft Excel 2003 XML””, with 2 buttons “Use Microsoft Excel 2003 XML Format” and “Use ODF Format”. I’m accustomed to saving in the MS Excel format but recently, I’ve been getting a follow-on window with text:“Error saving the document Untitled: Write Error. The file could not be written” I don’t see that I’m using formatting or content that I haven’t used before.

The only button to click is “OK” and that does not save the spreadsheet.

Is there documentation that identifies which formatting or content would trigger this scenario?

Thanks

Russ

When I read your statement, I get the impression that you used xls-format. Saving and opening and editing xls with LibO work very well. I use this frequently

xml-format is different from xls-fromat. Are you aware of this?

So far as I understand it, the xls is the original format and the xml is the follow-on. I hope that’s right. I didn’t think of saving in xls. I’ll give it a try.

Thanks.
