Notes in writer

I want to include notes about a document that do not get printed. Possibly create an outline of the document that I can follow along while writing without printing the outline.
And, if possible, do this with a Master document so that I can organize a substantial document.
I am clear on using Master Document structure. What I need is something like comments but that can be created before the document has been written.
Any suggestions?

If you can’t or don’t want to use comments, you can create a specific paragraph style for your notes. In the Font Effects tab of this paragraph style, enable Hidden attributes.

Such styled paragraphs won’t print and they won’t display either unless you check:

  • View>Formatting Marks (not really necessary but will add a dotted line below hidden text, making the difference really clear; personally, this setting is always “on” because it helps a lot to see what is happening in your formatting)
  • Tools>Options, LibreOffice Writer>View Hidden text and Hidden Paragraphs

Your skeleton outline can be styled with this paragraph style (without being numbered). When you decide it becomes part of the effective outline, change style from your custom one to some Heading n.

If you have a master document and subdocuments, I highly recommend you also create a template for all your styles and base all docs and subdocs on this template. This will spare you trouble about which style has precedence and keep all the set in consistent state.
