LibreOffice 7.0.6.2 Writer: Table of Contents

Right-click, “Update Index” causes ToC to completely disappear; don’t seem to have lost Heading 1, 2, etc. Should be glad of some assistance, please!

“have you customized the TOC structure line in its configuration dialog?” - sorry, I am not understanding what you are asking - I’m a new LibreOffice user and, in fact, editing an existing document; the body document headings seem to be corrected assigned, “1 Heading”, “2 Heading” with text “default paragraph style”

Thanks for your help - the document was originally MS .docx and now saved in .odt format. The formatting box definitely states “1 HEADING”, “2 HEADING” and “default paragraph style” …

Well noted, thanks - will set about changing to “Heading 1”, etc. - one thing which seem illogical is that Heading 1 is smallest, Heading 2 is biggest and Heading 3 is medium, by default - heirarchically one would expect 1,2,3 in descending order of font size?

For assistance, give more information about tour document. You say you markep up the outline with Heading n, but have you customized the TOC structure line in its configuration dialog?

Is it 1 Heading or Heading 1? Your language is perhaps not English; what is the name of the style in your language? Also, since your are editing an existing document, is is a Word one (filename ending in .doc(x)) or a native Writer one (.odt)? This is important because the outline style may not be translated correctly when converting from Word.

If your Heading 1-3 don’t looked “hierarchical”, they may have been modified in some way. Factory settings are, assuming a default 12pt font size in Default Paragraph Style, 18.2 pt (130%) bold for Heading 1, 16.1 pt (115%) bold for Heading 2 and 14.1 pt (101%) bold for Heading 3 and spacing above is also rougly proportional to font size.

You can customize the built-in styles just like any user style. I recommend you read the Writer Guide.

The style name mismatch is the cause of the loss of the TOC.

1 HEADING and the like are probably the styles used in the original .docx document. These are not the styles recognised by Writer as part of the outline structure.

Fix is easy. Put the cursor in every outline paragraph and reassign the correct style Heading n. Note the difference in order and case. The defintions of built-in styles Heading n contain attributes to identify such paragraphs as source for TOC construction.

PS: Default Paragraph Style in Writer should not be used for the discourse, contrary to Word. In Writer, this style is the base of all others and serves to define the defaults shared by all styles. “Standard discourse” style is Text Body.
