On opening Impress, the slide pane on the LH side always appears showing small images of the slides. I would prefer the slides to be listed with their names. Is this possible?

Not with that slide pane. But you can use the Navigator. Open it in the sidebar or separate. You can even dock it at the very same place as the slide pane or stack it over or under the slide pane.
