I received an excel file with embedded pdf files. Is there a way i can open these files? Every time I try to open the pdf I get a “General OLE error”.

If it is an embedded OLE file - Then the file size ought to be huge. It should be possible to cut and paste into writer or a new calc file. See if you can open it there. If your friend has inserted ole objects as a link - (file size lower) - The PDF files are sitting in his computer.
