How to save embed Excel files in Word files

Hi,
on Windows 7 using LibreOffice 4.2.4.2 I got a Microsoft Word file (docx filetype) that has Excel file embed in the Word file. Double clicking on a embed icon and spreadsheet (LibreOffice Calc) is opened as embed window inside Writer. I have resized embed spreadsheet, but I can’t resize it to actually see the numbers in spreadsheet.

Is there a way I can extract embed Excel file and save it as separate file that I can open in LibreOffice Calc?
Thanks

Answer:

  1. Make a copy of .docx file for backup.
  2. Rename extension from copied file from .docx to .zip
  3. Open zip file and click on “word” folder.
  4. Still inside zip file click on subfolder embeddings. There is an Excel file that is embed in Word file. Open this file and thats it, I can access Excel file.

Additional question:
How to extract embed file if using Open Document Format (ODF) file? In LibreOffice Writer I have saved above .docx file to .odt file. It looks like embed files are saved inside zip file in folder ObjectReplacements and the name is Obj100. But this file is in some unrecognized by me file format - it is not a pure Excel file, probably logical, because it is ODF file standard. I tried to rename Obj100 to Obj100.ods and opened by LibreOffice and the error I get is “General Error. General input/output error.” → strange error to me, nothing really describing, but it probably means file format is not recognized. Any idea how to extract embed files from ODF file types? Or is there only option to save to Microsoft .docx format?

Hi L, while editing the embedded sheet, try dragging by the sheet-tab to an already open new spreadsheet.
