Tips on how to use this site?

I’m not really sure how to use this site. I’d really like more help (an FAQ?) on

  • What types of questions are allowed
  • Where to take other types of questions that don’t meet the rules for this site
  • The best way for me to help triage incoming questions
  • What we should do with old questions (expire after a while?).

The difference between “comments” and “answers” seems a little awkward at times, especially given the fact that comments are

  • length-limited
  • have no formatting

while the answers have

  • special formatting
  • no character limit
  • give people karma

The site seems very promising, and I’d like to use it more, but I feel like I need more direction so that I can work efficiently and so that those of us volunteering our time can act in a consistent, reproducible fashion.

Only some remarks: it’s possible to upvote comments, too (but you’re right, this doesn’t raise karma). And it’s possible to use formatting like this in comments, there’s only documentation lacking. Even links are possible. Sadly the askbot.org docs are very terse.

Hmm…kind of fun to answer my own question here…

What types of questions are allowed?

Questions should be relevant to LibreOffice. Bug reports and feature requests should go directly to Bugzilla (easiest method is The Bug Submission Assistant).

If you’ve filed a bug report and it’s clear that the bug can’t/won’t get fixed for a while, feel free to come back to this site and ask for help in finding a Workaround (but file the bug first!

Where to take other types of questions that don’t meet the rules for this site?

There are several support and help avenues for LibreOffice. Take a look at the Help page here:

For meta questions about the Ask site, feel free to post to the Website list or visit the unofficial IRC channel #libreoffice-ask on freenode.

The best way for me to help triage incoming questions?

Good question!

The best way to help the site is to jump in and start answering questions. If you have enough karma, feel free to help with Tagging (both adding useful tags and removing less useful tags like “of” or “to” :-). If you have a bunch of karma, then you can do a lot more…

What we should do with old questions (expire after a while?).

Old questions currently fall into one of three categories:

  • Closed
  • Resolved
  • Still open

At some point we may consider closing some of our resolved questions, or even deleting some of the less useful ones (e.g. dupes or q’s with not enough information). As of Feb 2013, we’re still working on a backlog of old open questions, and that’s taking priority.

The difference between “comments” and “answers” seems a little awkward at times

Yes. Comments do have formatting, but it’s slightly different formatting, which can be rather annoying at times.

We still have a length limit on comments of 300 chars. We might bump that to 500 at some point, especially if users ask for it *hint* *hint*

Comments don’t give karma, but they do provide threading, and on Questions that have a number of people responding with various replies and replies-to-replies, using just Answers is impossible to follow.

Regarding Karma, please use your votes wisely. If someone’s Answer was helpful or their Question interesting, please upvote. Don’t be stingy – you’ve got 30 upvotes to use per day!

The site seems very promising, and I’d like to use it more, but I feel like I need more direction so that I can work efficiently and so that those of us volunteering our time can act in a consistent, reproducible fashion.

What an insightful and thoughtful comment! pats self on back

But all joking aside, if you do feel like you need more direction for using this site or would like to propose some changes/improvements, please engage us in discussion. The mods and admins are here to help you. Please drop by #libreoffice-ask and ask me a question!
