How can I insert title, author and page numbers in headers and footers?

I’ve spent (wasted) quite a bit of time reading the Libre Office manual on headers and footers and for the life of me, I can’t make any sense out of it. I’m working on formatting a book for Createspace, and I need a way to add page numbers on the bottom and the author name and book title at the top.

The instructions for doing these things are some of the most cryptic I’ve ever seen. And I’m no dummy, either. I have a graduate degree for crying out loud! Does anyone know of a good tutorial on how to do this in Writer?

Could you point out the cryptic part of the manual? It could help others to make things clearer. Did the manual suggest anything that didn’t work as expected?

Have you tried:

  • Insert → Header → Default
  • Typed your name and title in there
  • Insert → Footer → Default
  • Insert → Field → Page Number

?

What is it you are not happy with?
