After saving, I find that the page styles I painstakingly defined have been changed to “converted” and a number. The names I gave them were descriptive, and I don’t want them arbitrarily renamed. What can I do to retain the names I gave them?

What document format did you use to save your file in? On what operating system and using what version of LibreOffice?
OOXML does not support page styles, thus ODF page styles are renamed upon saving to that format. This is the style hierarchy, in order of application (i.e., override), as defined in ISO/IEC 29500-1:2012 §17.7.2:

@oweng - I had a look for the ISO/IEC 29500 -1:2012 §17.7.2: and found only a link to MS and another one where the download cost >$300.- Is there a link where the specs can be read free of charge?
@ROSt53, many ISO/IEC specifications do cost money, but the more popular ones are often funded by the corporation so they can be made available free of charge. There is a list of publicly available standards here. The fours parts to ISO/IEC 29500 (3rd Ed. / 2012) can all be downloaded. Part 1 (Fundamentals and Markup Language Reference) is the largest and the generally referenced one.
