I am creating a cross-reference to a numbered list item (paragraph number). When I am adding or deleting some paragraphs above, the number of linked para changes. But the number displayed in place of cross-reference inserted remains unchanged... How to adjust the cross-reference in order for the field to change simultaneously?

It is not currently possible to get the cross-reference field to automatically update when the destination location changes e.g., in an ordered list. The update can be forced via Tools > Update > Fields (F9). The related enhancement request is fdo#76794. The context in the bug report is for cross-references to endnotes, but the principle for any cross-reference is the same.
