Why won't LibreOffice start from the desktop icon on Debian?

Dear List -

LibreOffice
Version: 4.2.5.2
Build ID: 420m0(Build:2)
Language: English
Problem w/ all modules.

Debian Testing 64 bit

In the past, Libreoffice ran from the desktop icon with the command libreoffice --calc %U. Now, nothing happens. I get a prompt in the tray “starting libreoffice calc”, which then goes away.

I can start from the root terminal [only] as libreoffice --calc.

This is what I did:

  1. apt-get purge libreoffice
  2. apt-get update
  3. apt-get upgrade
  4. apt-get install libreoffice

Problem Persists.

TIA

The fact that it works only from a root terminal might suggest an issue with file permissions. What do you get if you try to start it from a non-root terminal? Where is it installed to, and do you have non-root permission to execute? What desktop environment are you running - Gnome, KDE, XFCE, etc? Is LibreOffice installed from a backports repository? Ultimately, it may be a more appropriate question for the Debian forums or package maintainers.

I CANNOT explain this one…when I started from the applications menu, I recieved an error message. After it went away, everythin was OK!!!
