can't make or open text document

From the splash screen I can make almost all of the file types by clicking on each icon. The “Text Document” icon does nothing when clicked on. If I try to open any text file from the splash screen the open dialog goes away and nothing happens.

Sorry about not enough info. The OS is SLED11, version 3.3.1 and it did work in the beginning but then stopped.

/usr/bin/libreoffice3.3 --writer --norestore
/usr/bin/libreoffice3.3 --writer
Showed the LibreOffice start bar, but no window opened. Also no error messages.

Followed the instructions to reset the user profile on the Wiki. Resetting the user profile did not fix the problem.

Which OS, which version of LibreOfice? Didn’t it work from beginning, or did it stop working any time?

If it’s a bug, it may be fixed in the current stable release. Did you try to install a current version of LibreOffice?

3.3.1 is quite old, would it be possible to update to the last stable version?

Independent from this, there are two steps that may help to narrow down the problem. First is starting writer from the command line and checking for errors. Second is renaming the user profile to to prevent any misconfiguration from blocking writer to start.

I’m not sure about the precise command name for LO 3.3, but if it’s analogous to 3.5, it should work with

/usr/bin/libreoffice3.3 --writer --norestore

Open a console window and enter that command. If you get a “command not found”, try to hit the TAB key after typing /usr/bin/libreoffice, using bash completion to get the correct command.

If this works, try the same without --norestore:

/usr/bin/libreoffice3.3 --writer

If you get any error messages, add them to your question.

Second Option is trying to reset the user profile. The LibreOffice Wiki has some information about this.

Good Luck!
