Why Can't LibreOffice Print Envelopes Correctly On The Brother MFC-8710DW?

Is there a fix in the works?

We’ve tried everything to correctly print envelopes with our Brother MFC-8710DW, but no matter what, it can’t print them with the right orientation. The Insert Envelope wizard appears to allow us to choose the right orientation (both envelope and text), but no matter what, the print comes out perpendicular to the envelope.

The MFC-8710DW requires that A10 envelopes be fed the long way from end-to-end (=), as opposed to from top-to-bottom(||). The Insert Envelope wizard indicates that this can be done, but no matter what we do, the text is printed as if the envelope was inserted from top-to-bottom (i.e., perpendicular to the envelope).

We’ve wasted HOURS trying to make this work, but we’ve concluded that it just isn’t possible with LibreOffice. This does however work easily and perfectly with Microsoft Word 2010. We’re trying to move from Microsoft to Linux, but this is a deal breaker, since this basic functionality is an absolute necessity for our work.

Again, LibreOffice CAN NOT print envelopes correctly for our particular setup, and yet the Insert Envelope wizards indicates that it can. I guess all I can ask is when this very serious bug will be fixed, if ever?

Thanks!

Is there another envelope printing application for Linux?

Reported as bug fdo#84204. Note that there are numerous open envelope printing related bugs. Many are unconfirmed as they require the same hardware / network / driver configuration for testing.

I will not be able to give you a full answer but I hope it is a useful hint.

Did you install a printer driver for your Brother printer which runs on Linux? Maybe you even need to have one even for the Linux version you are running. I would go into the Linux forum for your Linux version and search/ask there, search on the Brother printer homepage or make a general internet search.

I am also moving from Windows XP to Linux and searched for a printer driver for my Canon printer. There is one available but test is still pending.

It would be helpful for other if you publish your situation in more details; helpful in terms of giving you more hints and helpful for their own set-up of Linux with a Brother printer.

  • Which Linux version?
  • Which Printer driver?
  • Which printer settings?
  • Which LibO settings?
    etc

I had this or a very similar problem with an HP1000 under win7 using XP drivers. This printer will print envelopes either long or short dimension at the top of the feeder.

I tried many things until finally out of abundant frustration I tried setting the envelope orientation (in the Printer tab of the Envelope Window) opposite to the way I had the envelope loaded … and it worked perfectly!
