I just downloaded the latest version of LibreOffice Writer, and I'm having a problem cropping pictures.

With the previous version, I could widen a picture, or make it taller. Now when I try to expand a picture left or right, it expands the picture in ALL DIRECTIONS. Is there a way to fix this?

‘Latest’ is invalid version.

I seem to remember that the change was made with version 4 of LibO. It has been well documented. See the manual Getting Started for more details or WRITER manual if you are using images in Writer. Also the LibO HELP > Pictures:Scaling/Resizing is very useful.

The default settings for adjusting the size of an image has been switched. Previously you had to press the shift key to maintain the image shape, and you could widen or lengthen the image by selecting one of the corners or middle hot buttons.

Now the default is to maintain the existing shape. If you wish to widen or make the image taller, press the shift (upper case) button. Slightly confusing to start with but I personally prefer the new settings. Hope this helps Peter

Thanks Peter! That worked!
