Why can't I install the download?

I run XP and need to download the LibreOffice spreadsheet, as this is required by HMRC for use by charities. However when I try to install the download, a message pops up that says “This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.” How do I get by this and install the programme?

I using LibO on XP and there is no basic problem to install LibO. All it takes is a double click on the msi-file.

My way of doing it:

  • Download the file from here: http://www.libreoffice.org/ make sure you download the msi file.
  • Save the file somewhere on your PC
  • Download the Help file for your version and language
  • Save the file somewhere on your PC
  • Double click the msi-file - installation starts
  • You need more than 1 language: Do for the first installation a customized installation to select all the language requirements
  • You need only 1 language, you might be fine with the normal installation
  • At the end of the LibO installation double click the Help file and it installs automatically.

Here is also an installation guide for Windows: http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/install-howto/windows/

If this doesn’t help you please explain in details which steps you took and what the result of each step was.
