When LO open a document in View mode the document displays with a button to click to change to Edit mode. How do we stop the Edit button showing?

It is important for security that we allow documents for be viewed but not edited.

We are using version 4.4

It is only the area in yellow that we do not want displayed - it has the ‘Edit Document’ button in it.

I do not want to set passwords for all the documents but even when I tried that I could not work out how to set a ‘Permissions password’ when saving in Libre Office format.

You can secure LibO files by using passwords for read-only permission.

For this look into the displayed information in your “Save As” procedure.

If this is not the answer you are looking for, please provide more information and ideally a screen shot

Did you ever find an answer to this? I would like to stop the Edit bar from showing up when a document is opened in VIEW mode as well. We are trying to use LibreOffice as a replacement for the Microsoft viewers and are close - just need this issue resolved.

Thanks!

If you don’t want to set passwords, you can change OS rights to remove write permission. The edit button only appears when there is a possibility to activate write mode. If there is none, the button does not show.

To circumvent the possibility for user to reenable write permission, change also the owner of the file (for OS’es which have this notion of file owner) to some unusual user. The “public permission” will be set in the “world” part of the “owner-group-world” rights.

This is not 100% bullet-proof because a privileged user on another computer could wipe out the rights and restore write permission. But this slightly better than sending a file with write permission because it needs user intervention.

If your intent is to guarantee that document content has not been tampered with, consider digital signature. Any modification will cause a signature mismatch and Writer will report it. Digital signature cannot be spoofed unless the editor has a copy of our private key. Read at least built-in help on this topic.
