In fact I want to translate to another language the style names of a template, but that’s probably irrelevant here.
I don’t mind diddling the xml, but would it be safe for dependencies and so on just to right click the style - modify - and then change the name? Are accented characters (French in my case) OK when I do this, or should I leave out such frivolities?

Thanks. I have already started another thread ‘Proposal: italic and bold as built-in styles?’ because I agree with you but find the predefined styles don’t meet all ordinary requirements of ordinary users.
As far as I know you can modify the name of a style without loosing dependencies. So that shouldn’t be a problem. I am not sure about using accented characters since I don’t use them. Before adjusting the specific document, why don’t you create a new document and test it first? Better safe than sorry.

User defined styles can be renamed using the Paragraph Style dialogue box:
Style > Edit styles
This open the Paragraph Style dialogue box
This has the field ‘Name’ which is editable. It appears pre-defined styles can not be renamed.
