I'm new to Impress and have created a cover slide with various graphic elements (bitmaps) superimposed by a text box. I have assigned the elements different transition times to appear/disappear (fade in/out, etc.). I've gotten them all to work nicely except for the text box, which won't cooperate. The text box contains scrolling text. The text animation works in the preview, but it will not comply with the timing attributes -- No matter what order and timing/delays I assign to the text box in the custom animations utility, it remains on the screen first & last -- It's there the whole time regardless of the fact that I assigned it to appear and disappear at different times. I've been wracking my brain for 2 days trying to get this to work. Please help ASAP -- this presentation is for a class I have in a few hours!! Thank you!

OS: Win 8.1; LO version: 4.3.5.2; File format: ODP & will be converting it to .pptx when finished.

This worked for me in Windows 8.1 (still working through Linux Mint on timing, which changed):

Background: on each slide, for each text box, and each line in each text box I applied Custom Animation for Entrance and Exit effects. I used no Transition between slide and set all to 0.0 seconds.

Setup for each line, go to slide with text to animate, open Custom Animation on right side of LO Impress: Entrance Effect: 1) Select line in text box, click plus at bottom 2) In Entrance tab, scroll down and click on Fade In under Special 3) On lower right, click on select button and pick very fast, and click OK button 4) Effect Fade In and word string appears in Custom Animation, look at bottom under Effect Fade In 5) Click on select button and pick With Previous 6) Click on Options button, don't change anything in the Effect tab 7) Click on Timing tab to see settings, only pick delay if you want bullets to appear after one another, adjust to taste 8) Check out Text Animation tab, but don't change anything; click OK button and repeat for remaining lines in text box Note: you should put the Entrance Effect above any other Motion Path, Emphasis, or Misc Effects. Click on text string in Custom Animation with Entrance Effect and use the up and down arrow to place at top of other effects.

Exit Effect: 1) Select line in text box, click plus at bottom 2) In Exit tab, scroll down and click on Fade Out under Special 3) On lower right, click on select button and pick very fast, and click OK button 4) Effect Fade Out and word string appears in Custom Animation, look at bottom under Effect Fade Out 5) Click on select button and pick With Previous 6) Click on Options button, in Effect tab, Click on select button next to After animation, and pick Hide after animation 7) Click on Timing tab to see settings, adjust to taste (i.e. enter 2.8 seconds for a 3.0 second transition beginning to end - if all text are the same on the slide, the Entrance will happen in 0.1 second, the exit in 0.1 second, with a 2.8 second for a total of 3.0. In Linux, the transition increased to around 1.0 to 2.0 seconds, but in Win 8.1 this worked. If you like MS PP, you have more options with timing, but this should work the same. Experiment to get the best slide and text transition combo for your taste). 8) Check out Text Animation tab, but don't change anything; click OK button and repeat for remaining lines in text box

Note: if you are satisfied with your slide and want to record in a screen capture program like OBS, consider adding a blank slide before your title slide, add a text box with only an Effect Fade Out, and ... (more)
