Problems printing text

Hi,

I’m trying to print a simple letter using Libreoffice Writer but it will not print the text. It will however print draw objects like a simple line.

I am running Ubantu on my laptop connected (wireless) to a HP printer. I have tested the printer via the Ubantu “test print” and all is fine (including text). It will print draw objects via Libreoffice Writer so I know that something is getting through but never the text objects.

I have tried exporting the file as a pdf and the text shows together with draw objects when opened in a pdf viewer. The same result happens if you print from a pdf file. ie you get the draw objects but not the text!

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks…

Confirming the problem for Ubuntu 16.04 with LibreOffice 5.1.6~rc2-0ubuntu1~xenial1

Confirming the problem for Debian testing, LibreOffice 6.1.0.3 package 1:6.1.0-1. Also applies to calc, grid lines print but no text.

Debian testing, LibreOffice Version: 6.1.1.1 package 1:6.1.1~rc1-1 prints but character spacing for proportional fonts is garbled.

Can you print to the printer using simple text with the Ubuntu text editor?

Have you tried a simple Writer text file without any draw objects? If you have the same problem with LibO writer and a PDF file it looks as if the printer has not yet had any fonts downloaded. I always connect a printer using a cable and use this connection to check out the printer and especially its setup. A test print shows the hardware is working but not necessarily with the fonts you are using to do real printing…Peter

Have found that this is a known HP printer print cartridge problem. You may wish to go to their user website to find more information. Often the problem is associated with the black print cartridge, either blocked or empty. They suggest carefully cleaning the black print head. Images use the colour heads and thus can print. A possible test is to try changing the text colour to not black and see whether you get any output. So it is not a LibO Writer or PDF problem…Peter

Thanks Peter…I’ve just tried using the Writer text file and still no text is printing. I will try connecting via a cable and see that makes a difference.

Connected via cable and still have same problem. It will print draw objects fine but still no text. :frowning:

Hi

What you describe could happen if the text is not directly in the page but in a frame. You can set a frame for it is not printed.

To test this hypothesis you can:

  • Open the navigator (sidebar or F5). If there is a frame, Text Frames entry can be unfold.
  • Right-click the entry (eg Frame1) then Text Frame Edit.
  • Options tab, verify that Properties: Print is checked

If this answers the question, thank you to click on the :heavy_check_mark: to mark it ANSWERED.

The text that is not printing for me is not in a frame. The problem also applies to calc. Graphics and images print correctly from LibreOffice and there is no problem printing anything form any other programs.

Printing from any other software should work (Tried Kate text editor and PDF viewer Okular) so I’m using conversion to PDF as a workaround.
