Cannot open ole object

LibreOffice 4.3.7 Windows 7

I have a file which created from MS Excel and the file has an ole object which is an excel file. When I click that ole icon, it shows nothing. Is it a bug ? since I have to insert a temporary ole object , then I have the chance to change the first ole object to anchor “To page”, “To paragraph”, or “To character” from “As Character” and then I can delete that temporary ole object and save it, after doing those actions, I can open that ole object from writer successfully. Is there any way to solve this issue totally ? Thanks.
Found another two ways also can solve it temporarily.
One is if the document has image, then I click that image first, and then click the ole icon, it can show the floating tool bar for that ole object, therefore I have the chance to change the anchor.
The other one is to move cursor to the right of the ole icon, then click Font Color icon from formatting tool bar, then click the ole icon once, then click again, the floating tool bar for that ole object appears.

Your description is not clear. You mean, that the Excel file A itself has an Excel file B as OLE? What do you mean by “open OLE object from Writer”? Do you have a text document, with an OLE object, which is an Excel file? If yes, is it file A or file B?

I need my co-worker to modify some data for those files , since they have little bit confidential information, therefore I will upload the file tomorrow. Thanks.

I already uploaded the file. Thanks.

Hi

I reproduce the problem under windows with Version: 4.4.4.3 and future Version: 5.0.0.2.0+

What does not work:

  • Display Navigator (eg. sidebar or F5)
  • Right-click Object1 in the Ole section then Edit
  • Résutlat expected: edit the object
  • Actual result: displays Object dialog

Workaround:

  • Double-click Object1 in the Ole section (the object is selected)
  • Menu Edit Object Edit (spreadsheet opens).

I have not investigated whether the bug has already been reported…

Regards

Yes! This one is a good workaround. Thanks.

The reason is, that there is a frame containing a table in front of the text. The problem is not, that it is an Excel OLE, anchored as character. You cannot goto a special spot in the text by mouse click too. You will get a lot of trouble with such structure.

Either you do not put anything on the page itself but put all text into the frame and loose textflow to next page, or you get rid of frame and table and make a proper design with header and footer.

Word has a concept “floating table” which does not exist in LibreOffice. So on import such “floating table” is put into a frame.

Thanks for your detailed explanation, it’s very useful information. Thanks.

BTW, since the file was generated from MS Excel, and the company logo and the company name (I removed them from the ole.doc) , and the table are in the page header, the page header almost occupies the entire page, therefore I guess that LibreOffice might be a little bit confused about the structure.
