How do I open large (400 MB) .xls file in Calc?

Hello guys,

Calc just freezes in about 3/4ths of the loading bar. I tried everything (cutting the file: some slicers don’t work, others require Excel to work; converting to .ods: it is apparently too big for the online converters, and haven’t found any offline converter). How should I open that file?

You can file a bug, if your file content is not sensitive? This would allow developers to investigate the problem. What content is inside this Excel file? (graphs, conditional formatting, advanced formulas …) Is it XLS or XLSX? (try both).

Try to reduce the size of your file (check if all macros and colourations are necessary) try to transfer the content in a new Excel document (sometimes you can have an important weight gain). Good luck

Similar issue for some time, finding some files like two xls here fail to open, so fail to convert to ods

For reference the CSV version files open OK, then convert.

Noted earlier EU sort ability to convert XLS to ODS, so hoped this would be resolved.

IMHO is enough discourage some from change to ODS.
