Spread Sheets

I am using autodesk inventor which specifies Excel to perform some functions. Is the spreadsheets compatible with excel.

This may depend on whether Inventor (or any other third party program) is just calling for the use of spreadsheet, or is trying to integrate with the spreadsheet through an API, for example. If the latter, then it likely won’t work with LO.
A parallel example exists in (infrafed) reporting software that uses MS Word as its interface. It only works with Word, not with any other word processor.

Are you asking whether Calc (the spreadsheet within LO/OO) can be used as a replacement for Excel (in general, yes), and specifically as a replacement during interaction with AutoDesk Inventor? For the latter, test it out.

I see that there are sample XLS files provided to illustrate Excel/Inventor interaction. LO can read/write such files. Therefore, use LO/OO to change some values in (a copy of) that spreadsheet & re-import. Note that if you use LO’s own format (ODS) that it may then save non-Excel compatible values.
