can someone help me with numbering pages which number automatically consecutively?
Also want to know if a page is subsequently deleted will the rest correctly number themselves.
currently I can enter a number but this has a grey background which i cannot get rid of. Thanks.

The simplest way to achieve this is to switch on the Page Header in the Style that you are using for your document, place the cursor within that header, then insert a page-number field ((
menu):Insert→Fields→Page Number).

That is an artefact of LO, but it does not print nor transfer to PDFs. You can toggle that behaviour on/off as follows:-
