How to correct a problem when opening files in word --- I get an error message bad allocation

I’m trying to open files in the Word Processing program (in both version 4.4.5 and 5.0). But it keeps going to recover documents and when I click finish the action of recover just repeats over and over but the document is not opened. When I close the program I get the error message – Fatal error, bad allocation. What is the problem and how can I correct this?

There are lock-files created at LO startup (one in the same dir/folder as the document, the other within your personal Profile dir/folder) which, if not removed at close-down, tell LO at the next startup that you have a document that needs to be recovered. However, the first thing to do with weirdness like this is to rename your Profile:

Restore a Default Profile

Restore a Default Profile (the actions below are easily reversible). When you uninstall/update LO/OO it does NOT uninstall/delete the profile. The profile contains a user’s setup.

“If you notice any strange behaviour on LibreOffice, or simply it fails to start, the first thing to try is to reset the user profile.”

  1. Shut down LO/OO (also quickstarter)
  2. Find your profile
  3. Rename the dir
  4. Restart LO and/or Quickstarter
(on restart, LO will re-create the Profile directory + contents, using full defaults)

Finally, remove any lock-file within the document directory (you will need to enable “searching for hidden files” within your OS). Now with a default Profile that weird behaviour should simply go away (although, of course, if the document is corrupted then it will not open correctly).

If this helps then please tick the answer (:heavy_check_mark:)
