Error message: "to open LibreOffice you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime"

I have just installed LibreOffice_5.0.2_MacOS_x86-64 on a Mac that runs OS X El Capitan 10.11, and I get the error message “to open LibreOffice you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime”

Do I really need to install the old Java 6 against what Apple says about it being unsafe?
How do I solve this problem?

Thanks for any tip.

Hi Chris140

LO needs to have a JRE that is the same bit-width as the program is compiled against. So, having installed a 64-bit LO you need a 64-bit JRE. There is such a beast!

If you have more than one JRE on your system you choose between them at this place:

  • (menu):ToolsOptions...LibreOfficeAdvanced

If this helps then please tick the answer (:heavy_check_mark:)

…and/or show you like it with an uptick ()

Hi !

jre-8u60-macosx-x64.dmg is the Java installed on my system, and I have the same issue as Chris140.

I cannot access to (menu):Tools→Options…→LibreOffice→Advanced

as I cannot even open Libre Office.

Help !

@gdaudin: make your own question. Chris140 isn’t responding, and I’m not going to try to support 2 different systems in one post. When you make your Q specify your LO version + bit-width, Mac version + OS bit-width & installed Java + source + bit-width.

FWIW, I got it to work with this

I did have to download a full JDK instead of a JRE because the directory paths referenced on that link don’t exist with just a JRE. But it’s fine now. My configuration is
OSX 10.11.1
LibreOffice 5.0.3.2
$ java -version
java version “1.8.0_45”
Java™ SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_45-b14)
Java HotSpot™ 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.45-b02, mixed mode)

The instructions at “unfinisedbitness.info” fixed the problem on my system (MacOSX 10.10 Yosemite).
