When adding endnotes within sections included in a master document they show up at the end on a page all by themselves and there does not seem to be any way to add a heading to that page. Is there any way to add a heading or is there any way to create a user defined index, using the number variable, that allows this?
Solved with a work around. It isn’t perfect but it gets me what I want.
In sub-documents I inserted a bibliography entry with a short name associated with the source article I needed to reference and the type of entry is set to article.
In the master document the bibliography table is set to Number Entries with brackets. The article type entry is edited such that it shows the short name (which is the number inside brackets) followed be the association that provided the article, the title of the article and the url of the article. I use a custom appendix style heading for the title so that the bibliography is automatically numbered with my appendices.
The only issue I have with this approach is that when I update the bibliography in the master document I need to edit the article type entry again and set the url character to ‘internet link’. For some reason this gets reset.

A study from the Business Development Bank of Canada in 2013 identifies 5 consumer trends that will shape the future of retail in Canada[1][2]

I attempted this but you can’t nest sections of a master document within a section for the endnotes. The endnotes section must include all the sections of sub-documents within it.
The bibliography solution collects all the entries from each sub-document and places them in the bibliography table. The bibliography table can also be inserted anywhere in the document (does not need to be the last page). Probably can’t have another actual bibliography though if you wanted one.
