cant get rid of paint can icon -- how to get back text cursor

While writing a short document, I wanted to change the color of the text & tried to do so before typing it. The color didn’t change, and I got a paint can icon. Now, i can’t get rid of the paint can & get back my cursor. (Although the color did eventually change.) With the paint can there, I cannot edit by highlighting sections. It will highlight for a moment, then lose it as soon as I release my finger from the mouse.

Thanks in advance.

I have the exact same problem and it is frustrating!

Same here. Really not getting on with the new interface.

I have the same problem. Has there been any resolution? Version 5.1.6.2

Just click Esc

Bingo! That is exactly correct. It’s the simple things that are hard, sometimes. :0) Thanks, very.

LibreOffice Writer document (thought I’d have to start over, crazy) on version 5.3.7.2 (x64) of LibreOffice

That doesn’t work. Version 5.4.2.2, Ubuntu Linux x86-64.

Escape key didn’t work for me, but what did work was:
F11 (which opens Styles and Formatting window)
Click the paint bucket icon there which is a switch for Fill Format Mode
