How do I open files with the spreadsheet application?

I used the libreoffice spreadsheet application to create a file. I saved the file in odt format. I can now no longer open the file with libreoffice.

When I attempt to open it, I get an error message indicating that an unknown user has locked the file.

I am then given a choice to open the file in read only mode, which is pointless to me because I want to edit the file.

How can access the file from libreoffice, and prevent the files from being locked?

Sorry, did not quite understand. You actually save the file in ODT (Open Document TEXT) or is it in ODS (Open Document Spreadsheet)?

Open file in read only mode and after that Save as… with new name in desired format.

My guess is that you who opened this file, but:

  1. you did not set your personal data in menu Tools > Options > LibreOffice > User Data (it suffice to enter your name). As a consequence LO does not know who is editing the file
  2. LO crashed and the lock-file has not been removed
  3. When you try to reopen your file, LO see the lock-file and thinks that the file is already open, but it does not know by whom.

In such a situation, if you had set your personal data, LO would propose you a third choice: open the file anyway.

How to solve the problem at the moment?

  1. configure your file manager to show hidden files
  2. remove the file named .~lock.# where filename is the name of your file
  3. restart LO and set your personal data
  4. enjoy
