Importing English numbers into a German spreadsheet

Hi all,

I am receiving an English csv and want to open it with a German version of Libre Office, as the output should be German.

Even with the option to “detect numbers” checked, I am getting the English numbers as text, not as a number. Currently I am using Find and Replace “.” to “,”, but there’s plenty of obscure errors happening instead (sometimes, the “.” disappears but the “,” isn’t set, suddenly resulting in a number that’s 1000 times higher than expected).

Is there a way to convert English to German more easily?

Of course it is possible! Just set type of column as English (settings of import filter)

StepByStep

Aaaah okay, that helps, thanks! Then I have to change the format in the spreadsheet itself back to German again.

Is there a way of automatically import US English numbers in German format?

Why?!! No need! Just set Sprache=Deutsch (second field) and see result of this

Sadly that doesn’t work. I can now import English numbers as English numbers, but they retain the “.” instead of getting a “,”. I need to manually format these rows only and switch them back to German numbers.

This is Libre Office 4.4.5.2, locale: de_DE

This solution works in Open Office just fine, by the way - I tried it, thanks!

Libre Office still doesn’t want to perform this without manually reformatting the cells. But thanks!

Hallo

Select or doubleclick the Columnheader[s] in the preview-area at bottom of CSV-Import-dialog and change the type from Standard to US-english

[edit: to slow  ]

By German numbers do you mean 111,34 rather than 111.34? This is the way of displaying numbers rather than two different numbers. Excuse my contribution as I am not a spreadsheet person, but the way I do it is to import the CSV as English as suggested above and then you will have straight numbers but displayed as “English”. Sorry to give the example below in English as my German is not up to the taks.

You can then adjust the way they look by selecting the required columns and then in my English version, FORMAT CELLS > NUMBERS Choose the English version of number > Then select Language GERMAN (Germany) and edit the format code, changing (.) to (,). Select OK and the number display will be in German… seems to work for me in English to French… Peter

This is correct, but it’s a complicated way to do when it’s not a single row or column but several different columns spread across the entire sheet. I was hoping for a solution to automatically import English (10.99) numbers to German (10,99) numbers without the need to manually reformat affected cells afterwards.

This way of course works, at least, so that’s something!

What works fine for me it’s use in the import window English (UK), instead in my case Spanish (Spain), it works for numbers with dot and with dates in an European format.
