i notice that documents are autosaving all the time, and usually are recovered. but this time the recovered file was one i had saved along time ago, and not the one with all my most recent work added. Is there a chance to find that more recent version of the document? and if so, where would that be?

You might be lucky there: {user}\user\backup{user}/user/backup

For Windows 7 it would be like: C:\user{user}\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\4\user\backup

But as far as i can see there is one bak file per file name saved.
