Editting MS Office Documents

Can I seamlessly view, edit and save MS Office document using LibreOffice. Will I be able to edit MS Office documents in place using Libre, or will I have to use an intermediate file which will then be converted either way.

I don’t have use any macros in my documents, but sometimes I have to use someone else’s documents so then I can’t be sure if they don’t contain any macros.

The short answer is “yes.” The slightly longer answer is that LO will warn you when you “Save As…” and select docx, xlsx, etc. that some LO features may not be compatible with Word, Excel, etc. and therefore may be lost if you save in that format.

My suggestion: save often, and check your output for any changes made between saves. Under most circumstances, I suspect you will be just fine.

One quick note concerning macros. VBA macros may not run “as is” in LO, but I’m not aware that they will be disturbed either – so they should be there in the docx, xlsx, etc. file after you save (but I repeat my advice concerning saving often and checking changes between saves).

Hope this helps.

You need to specify to always use OpenDocument Format (in a text doc’s case ODT and in spreadsheet’s case ODS, among the other default formats) before saving as another format.

Good point. I didn’t realize I had “mispoken.” I was actually thinking in terms of the initial save when I wrote that – but the point remains the same. If memory serves, you get the warning if you choose to save to MS formats instead of open document formats.
