[Solved]How to delete the header from first two pages - first page is a default page?

Hi there,

I have a 100-page book manuscript in LO writer as odt format.

I want the first page to be a default page, the second page is an index since it has index in it. The third page would have the first chapter and the page numbers must start from here.

My issue is:

When I change the first page to “First page” style in page style, and set two title pages under format–>title page and reset. The third page perfectly starts from page number one.

But I want my first page to be a “Default” page. And if I delete the header for this to get rid of page number, all the header for the whole book gets deleted.

I am successful starting the page number from third page only when the first page is kept as “First Page” under page style.

NOW, could you please help me by suggesting ways that I can use to have the first page as default page, yet managing to having the page number started from the third page where the first chapter starts.

Basically, header and footer are properties of the chosen page style. Consequently, when you want to change your header title, you must switch to another page style (you can create as many pages styles as you need, e.g. by right-clicking on an existing style in the style panel [F11] and choosing New to start with a cloned style). Usually you also insert a page break to rigourously control when the new style starts.

What you describe looks like a “hierarchy” issue, though page styles cannot be organised as a hierarchy (style depending on an another and defined as a delta or difference against that style). However, you modified “Default” which is used in the other categories (paragraph and character at least) to set common properties which cascade to all other styles. “Default” may be special for page styles too, since you seem to achieve your expected result when you apply another style.

What is the technical reason for having the first page typed “Default”?

It should work as long as you use page styles properly. I don’t understand what really is the issue with having your page 1 as a default style … but anyway.

Easy way is to have page 1 as “First page” style with no header
At the end of the page insert a manual page break specifying that the next one should have “Second page” style.
Have page 2 as “Second page” style if this differ from the previous
Again at the end of the page insert a manual page break specifying that the next one should have “Body page” style.
Have page 3 and all the others (maybe but the last ones) as “Body page” with a header and footer.

This for me is the best way of doing it. If for whatever reason you want to stick to default for the first one then.

Set all the document to default and get rid of header and footer.
Before the page you want the footer/header to start insert a manual page break and give the next page a different page style.
Go to the next page and apply on that style header and footer only. You default should still be without one.

Thanks and thank you both for answering. I am new to LO Writer. That did solve the problem. My mistake was that instead of First Page, I was blindly stubborn on “Default” without much understanding. Now, when I change the title pages again to two, I got rid of the headers and the third one starts from page 1. Thanks for your time both. Good day.
