How to include math formulas in text document?

I’m complete newbie. I see the sidebar with write document, draw drawing, math formula, etc. Are math formulas kept separated from text documents? What do I do after I typed a formula? How to include math formulas in a text document?

The formula editor is opened with menu InsertObjectFormula.... Your formula is then composed graphically, selecting the kind of operator from the drop-down menu in the left panel and clicking on the required operator. Operands are typed to replace the placeholders in the bottom editing pane.

Clicking in the upper document pane brings you back to standard document editing. Double-clicking on the formula reopens the formula editor for modification.

However, composition rules are not immediately obvious, so that you are strongly advised to read the Math user guide which can be downloaded from the LO site in ODT or PDF format.

Built-in help (F1) can afterwards be used as a quick reminder.

Thank you. Didn’t know the function of ‘community’, too late to check it? (can’t find the button)

Just click the gray check mark near the bottom of the first paragraph of the answer so it turns green.
