Let LibreOffice convert equation from Microsoft Equation Editor format to LibreOffice format

Microsoft Equation Editor has included in Microsoft Office for a long time, and it was become a wide spread tool to construct math and science equations within a document. Since 2007, MS Office started using a new tool to construct equations, but MS Equation Editor is still included in MS Office for compatibility purpose, and some people still used this editor to create equations within document even if in OOXML file.

Despite LibreOffice has its own tool to create or edit an equation within a document, there is a short board that LO have no way to let users to edit equations which have been made by MS Equation Editor, furthermore, LO is failed to display them properly. If LO got a way to support MS Equation Editor based equations, and let users convert them into LO supported formats, it would make a conveniences to users even if he/she has no MS Equation Editor.

Bug 101411 is related to this.

Actually the old “MS Equation Editor” is not a product of Microsoft but it is a licensed version of MathType, produced by Design Science. There exists no public specification and therefore such converting is not easily possible. From my point of view, it is more sensible, if developers use their time to implement the converting of the new Equation Editor formulas, because that is the current one and its specification is published. I guess, that an enhancement request in Bugzilla for converting from the MathType form will get a “wontfix”, but I might be wrong. Nevertheless, the Ask forum is the wrong place for an enhancement request, use Bugzilla instead.
