On Macbook Air LibreOffice database complains "No Java installation found" w JRE and JDK installed

I am trying to connect to a LibreOffice spreadsheet datasource. I have installed both the latest JRE and JDK. No prompt for starting them up. I assumed LibreOffice for Macbook would be able to determine they are installed, but it keeps telling me “No Java installation could be found.” I am running El Capitan OS X 10.11.6 (15G31).

If you have already installed Java, you need to find its path and add it to Options>LibreOffice>Advanced and tick the checkbox Use a Java runtime environment, where you can browse to your Java location and set its path for LibreOffice. To find where Java is installed, open a bash shell and enter:

whereis java
