How is a List Style linked to a Paragraph Style?

I know how I have to link Character Styles to List Styles to create various types of bulleted lists.

Now I would like to create a Paragraph Style (eg. Text Body 2) which is linked to a List Style I have defined.

With this Paragraph Style I want to write the normal text and when I need bullets, I want to switch them on by clicking shift+ctrl+B.

How to I have to link a List Style to my new Paragraph Style called Text Body 2?

I found How do I create a multi-level/multi-paragraph style that functions as a list? but the answer there is using direct formatting, which I don’t want to do.

Usually, you don’t need to link a paragraph style to a list style.

Create a shortcut key for your defined list style:

Menu Tools → Customize → Keyboard tab →

Category: Styles → Numbering

Function: List x

Select a shortcut key

Modify → OK.

Type text with your paragraph style “Text body 2”,

Switch to the list style with the shortcut key.

Another possibility
(more options for modifying the numbering style in post-editing: font, font size, etc.):

Create a paragraph style “Text body 2n”, based on your paragraph style “Text body 2” (context: New…).

Embed your list style in this paragraph style via
Outline & Numbering → Numbering Style → select your list style:

Switch to the list style with paragraph style “Text body 2n”.

@manj_k I still do not understand why the List N and Numbering N paragraph styles are not automatically linked with the corresponding list styles. What is the point of having all the List N and Numbering N paragraph styles?

@manj_k, the question here indicates an issue with option (1): how is an list style assigned via this method removed? Direct formatting can be used as an override, but the problem does not appear to have a style-based solution.

It seems I have jsut 1 question left:
I assume that your example 2 was originally a TEXT BODY. Therefore in the organizer tab NEXT STYLE was TEXT BODY. Do you keep TEXT BODY as next style and only add LIST1 as numbering style?

Why does a PARAGRAPH STYLE show at tab INDENTS & SPACING the distance before and after text in units “ch” ( I assume this means characters) and in LIST STYLE the displayed unit is “cm”?

(1) The paragraph style "Text body 2n" is (in this case) paragraph style "Text body 2" + embedded list style "List 1"; "Next style" is "Text body 2n", "Linked with: Text body 2".

(2) To show indents and spacing in unit "cm/mm/...": Tools → Options → LibreOffice Writer → General → Settings → ☐ Enable char unit (disabled). Maybe, you have to restart LibreOffice.

I do have an additional question:

When I use the default Paragraph Style Text Body and want to create a bulleted list, all I need to do is to switch bulleted list on (ctrl+ shift+b or click the related icon). This works fine and I even get 10 levels of bullets. Switching bullets OFF all is normal text with Paragraph Style: Text Body

Now I want to modify the bullets (=bullet characters), their indents and spacing for this very bulleted list only and want the new setting be “registered” in the default Paragraph Style Text Body. What do I need to do?

(1) It is impossible to “register” such a list style in the default paragraph style "Text body". You have to create and to apply a list style (or to create a linked paragraph style with the embedded list style; then you have to apply this paragraph style).

and another question

Looking at Chapter of the Writer Guide and follow the procedure described on page I created a new Paragraph Style (text body R2) and linked it with a new List Style (new list R) for which I chose a special character as bullet
When I hit ENTER and apply text body R2 there is immediately the bullet which I chose with in the new list R.
When I switch the bullets off (ctrl+shift+b) the text appears as expected and the paragraph style text body R2 appears selected in the Styles Window. However, when I switch the bullets on (ctrl+shift+b) I first get the bullet of the default Text Body style. Only when hitting ctrl+shift+b again my bullet selected for the paragraph style text body R2 appears. What do I make wrong?

Live with it… :wink: – or create a shortcut key for your customized list style. — See also → [LO3.6] Writer bulletted list button doesn’t use any style - can’t customize.

The default function of "Ctrl+Shift+B" is "Format Subscript". Do you use the shortcut for "Numbering Bullets On/Off"?
