text table lookup

I use a far superior 123 lotus from 1984, where you didn’t need equal signs and could jump to labels. Ui wasn’t as easy but had great interactive tutorials, and just could do more meaningful stuff.

Another issue with modern spread sheets, is the vlookup is broken. I could vlookup a number or a text string, which made job estimating far easier, because I can remember a word or two far easier than a 3 digit meaningless random number assigned to a movement that I am looking up the rate.

So, is it just another thing taken out, broken, by ignorant coders (another example is in early spreadsheets we could set field width, eliminating need to return key on data entry, saving hundreds a key clicks per hour, thousands per week)? Or is there a workaround in the formula entry?

=VLOOKUP(E92,$AE$6:$AH$320,4) this fails is I put “tarp”, a text string, but works if I put a number like 200, as a replacement for tarp.

When you entered “tarp” in cell E92 did you also type the quotes? This is not required and would cause it to search for the occurence of “tarp” in quotes within your table.
